A classic Meghalaya holiday from Guwahati. Stop at Umiam Lake on the way to Shillong, spend two days among the waterfalls, caves and viewpoints of Cherrapunji (Sohra) with Nohkalikai Falls and the living root bridges, visit Mawlynnong - often called the cleanest village in Asia - and float on the glass-clear Umngot river at Dawki.
Overnight stay in Shillong
Pick-up from Guwahati airport or railway station and drive to Shillong (about 3 hours), stopping at Umiam Lake. Evening at Police Bazaar.
Overnight stay in Cherrapunji
Drive to Sohra via the Mawkdok Dympep valley viewpoint. Visit Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave, the Seven Sisters Falls and the Eco Park.
Overnight stay in Cherrapunji
For the fit, the 3,500-step trail from Tyrna to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge at Nongriat and its natural pools; others can take an easy walk to a single root bridge and visit Arwah Cave.
Overnight stay in Shillong
Drive to Mawlynnong, often called the cleanest village in Asia, and the Riwai root bridge, then to Dawki for a boat ride on the clear Umngot river near the Bangladesh border. Return to Shillong.
Tour Ends
Morning at Ward's Lake and the Don Bosco Museum (or Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati), then drop-off at Guwahati airport or railway station.
October to April. The Umngot river at Dawki is clearest from November to March; the waterfalls are fullest in the June - September monsoon, but boating at Dawki may stop after heavy rain.
Indian citizens only need a valid government photo ID. Foreign nationals need a valid passport and Indian visa; no special permit is needed for Meghalaya.

It is about 3,500 steps each way from Tyrna - steep but manageable for reasonably fit travellers (4 - 5 hours return). The single root bridges near Mawlynnong and Sohra are an easy walk.
