Go beyond the usual western circuit. After Thimphu and Punakha, cross into the glacial Phobjikha valley, winter home of the black-necked cranes, and over the Pele La pass and Trongsa to Bumthang, Bhutan's spiritual heartland of ancient temples, then fly back to Paro for the hike to Tiger's Nest.

Fly into Paro and drive to Thimphu. Visit the Buddha Dordenma at sunset.

Cross Dochula Pass with its 108 chortens, visit Punakha Dzong and walk the Punakha suspension bridge.

Visit Chimi Lhakhang, then drive to the glacial Phobjikha valley, winter home of the black-necked cranes, and Gangtey Monastery.

Morning Gangtey nature trail, then drive over Pele La pass and past Trongsa Dzong to Jakar in Bumthang.

Jambay Lhakhang, Kurje Lhakhang, Tamshing Goemba and Jakar Dzong, with a stop at the Swiss cheese factory.

Morning domestic flight to Paro (weather permitting). Visit the National Museum and Rinpung Dzong.

Hike to Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery clinging to the cliff 900 m above the valley.
