6 Days / 5 Nights The Old Capital of Bhutan
A warm, fertile valley where two rivers meet beneath
Bhutan's most beautiful dzong.
Punakha was Bhutan's capital until 1955 and remains one of its most beautiful valleys. At the meeting of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers stands Punakha Dzong, the Palace of Great Happiness, famous for the lilac jacaranda trees that bloom around it in spring. Cross the long suspension bridge draped with prayer flags, walk through rice terraces to the fertility temple of Chimi Lhakhang and enjoy the valley's mild climate, which is warmer than Paro and Thimphu.

Punakha is pleasant for most of the year and warmer than the rest of western Bhutan, which makes it a good winter destination too. Spring is the prettiest season, when the Punakha Drubchen and Tshechu festivals are held and the jacarandas bloom around the dzong. Autumn brings golden rice fields and clear skies.
